We make smallholder farming in Africa pay

Emata is a Ugandan fintech and licensed MFI. We embed finance directly into agricultural value chains, so farmers can invest in their farms, and agri companies can plan with confidence.

Because when farmers grow, companies grow — and Africa grows.

Our story

2020
We started Emata out of our frustration that African banks were not using new tech and big data to finance farmers.

Farmers account for 20-30% of African economies but only receive a fraction of loans.

In March 2020, we set out to solve agricultural financing! In December, we received our Microfinance License in Uganda.
2021
We started lending to (dairy) farmers in February 2021!

In May, we won Catapult Inclusion Africa.
2022
We expanded from dairy into maize, oilseeds & coffee.

We also joined the Norrsken Impact Accelerator in Stockholm, Sweden.
2023
We raised a $2.4 million seed round backed by African Renaissance Partners, Norrsken VC, DRK Foundation, Zephyr Acorn, Marcus Boström & the Dutch Embassy.

We were also named "Best Newcomer" in the world at the Global Startup Awards!
And now?
We are scaling up across East Africa, and exploring new value chains.
